Rengam Handwoven Ready-made Apparel Making Cluster, Majuli

A women-led initiative to translate Majuli’s centuries-old weaving traditions into scalable, market-ready apparel while safeguarding cultural identity.

Majuli—the world’s largest river island—is celebrated for its vibrant biodiversity and indigenous culture. Among its tribal communities, the Mising women are revered custodians of handloom weaving, creating Mekhela Chadar, Eri scarves, Ribi Gaseng and Galuk with motifs that mirror nature and folklore. Yet the sector faces fragmented production, minimal design innovation and limited market access, leaving artisans with modest, inconsistent earnings.

To organise 750+ artisans from 30 villages into a sustainable cluster, upgrade skills & infrastructure, and integrate Majuli’s handloom products with national and global markets—thereby securing cultural heritage and enhancing rural livelihoods.

  • Scheme: SFURTI, Ministry of MSME, Government of India.
  • Special Purpose Vehicle: Rengam women’s cooperative society.
  • Implementing Agency: Amar Majuli Foundation.
  • Technical Agency: Arohan Inclusive Pvt. Ltd.

  • Income Growth: Monthly earnings per weaver to rise from ₹1,125 to ₹2,250–₹2,800, adding ₹27–33 k annually.
  • Total Payouts: ₹20.03 crore distributed over five years via dividends & incentives to 764 weavers.
  • Market Linkages: 20–30 % sales boost via e-commerce, buyer–seller meets & branding.
